Info

The Jordaan
The Jordaan, this colourful, most sung about neighbourhood is famous for its cafés, restaurants, unusual shops, but especially for its atmosphere. With its labyrinth of narrow streets and canals, is one of the most characteristic districts of Amsterdam.
This area was founded in the 17th century when the unprecendented economic flourishing of the city created a huge influx of immigrants from all over Europe. The Jordaan emerged on the western side of the Prinsengracht, a densely-built district with small homes for artisans and artists.
Walking through the narrows streets it seems to be you are far away from the busy shoppings streets. But these quiet streets have a lot of small shops, restaurants, bars and gallerys.
